I've been thinking about what motivates me when I really don't want to exercise.

My favorite is to write down what I have recently accomplished, little goals I've completed.
The result is thinking Wow, I did all that? and feeling pretty pleased with myself, and wanting to get to work.
But there are tricks to it. I can't just list accomplishments. I've got to write it in more of a journal style to get the full impact. Instead of "I went swimming yesterday" I write something like "I had a great swim yesterday at the lake. I really felt my backstroke getting stronger, more fluid. I loved watching the clouds move in" ... etc.
Also, I can't spend too much time writing or that takes away the charge, maybe 10 minutes is good.
Thought this might be useful for someone out there?

Krista, Liked your "mess with you head" tip. I've been walking on my office treadmill for the last few months, my mind thinks I'm doing computer office work or browsing and I forget I'm walking. It's been great.
Thanks for your excellent website.

Dear Krista,

Thanks for the speedy, blunt but motivating response! You're right, the only way to do something about my ass is to stop complaining and overthinking and get off of it!

Janet: So this is what you're saying:

1. When you were in shape you felt great.
2. Now you are not in shape and you feel bad.

You can either (a) get back in shape and assume a very good chance of #1 occurring, as evidence shows it will.

Or you can not do anything and stay at #2.

Exercise does NOT aggravate "cellulite" nor stretch marks. But either way, you can keep going along feeling like shit, or you can do something that you KNOW will make you feel better. Your call.

I'm struggling with a particular thought that has been hurting my motivation. Over the past 4 months I have gained at approximately 15 lbs of fat (I don't weight myself too often but I can gauge this number by the way my clothes fit and the way my body looks). I'm very disappointed, because I had reached a weight/body composition that I felt great in, both physically and emotionally. I had never felt happier or healthier. Unfortunately, I threw this balance off last summer by not exercising (I live in Florida and had trouble getting myself to do anything in the heat) and by eating too many simple carbs. The weight piled on quickly, and really bad cellulite and stretchmarks came with it. Is there any way to lessen the appearance of these skin conditions through exercise and nutrition, or am I stuck with them forever even if I lose weight? I read somewhere that weight-loss actually aggravates the appearance of cellulite and stretchmarks, so now I feel that whatever I do, I won't be able to get my body back to a point where I felt truly confident. Is there ANY way to alleviate these conditions?

This is brilliant - thank you. I confess, the inspiration-before-action trap had me good - your article is a great mental head-slap that most of the time it works in reverse.
