Yet another great article. This is one that I need to keep coming back to and reading over. Even though I know all the important reasons for resting & recovery, I find it REALLY difficult to stay away from the gym. Experience has taught me though, that I need at least 1-2 days off per week. I say at least, but I never rest more than 1-2 days. Impossible! I just love getting in there and "beating the crap out of my body" and seeing how much better I can do than last time.

A day off the gym is like a Monday back at work!

Marion -- that's fine. Bear in mind humans did not evolve to sit around for several days between "workouts". :)

Thanks for the site - I've really been enjoying your articles.

I started going to the gym for weight training and cardio about five weeks ago, and have been doing it 3-4 times a week. My plan is to go every second day, but I go at whatever time of day works best according to whatever else is happening - anytime from around 8 am to 9:30 pm.

I'm wondering if this is a problem in terms of recovery. Let's say I start a workout at 8 pm on Tuesday, then on Thursday I start at 8am. Although it's been "two days", it's really 36 hours, not 48 hours. Is that too short a rest? If I'm not free to go to the gym Thursday evening, would I be better off waiting till Friday instead of going Thursday morning?

Thanks, Marion
