Definitely work on conscious relaxation of the neck muscles. Think about pressing oneself away from the weight rather than pressing the weight overhead.

Try this funny trick: press your tongue to the roof of your mouth when shoulder pressing.

Krista, any ideas regarding what might be causing my workout buddy's neck to feel sore after her sets of standing overhead presses? For some reason, when I watch her form from the side, her head seems really strained and shakes, and I'm thinking this is probably the cause, but we couldn't pinpoint why she's straining it so hard, or get her to relax it. Any ideas?

Hadija: Start with the smallest weight. Try it out. If it's too light, add a little weight. If it's just right, stay there. Repeat until you get the right weight.

How much weight should an absolute beginner start with? I'm eager to start, but intimidated as to what I should consider putting on the bar to begin with.

Anything that extends (straightens) the elbow will involve the triceps. So do what you can manage.

Hi Krista,
For your super triceps exercise above with the narrow grip: I'm doing all my exercises with dumbbells, and I can't do it with the bar because I have carpel tunnels, and must keep my wrists in a neutral position. Would that exercise work with two dumbbells rested against each other? Do the wrists need to be bent to target the triceps?
