Krista, can I be you when I grow up?

Excellent writing... funny, timely, and has lifted a weight I wasn't aware was weighing on me.

Wow. I'm pretty sure this is exactly what I needed to read. While I'm not any sort of personal trainer or nutritionist, I've always felt like I should be able to just suck it up and DO IT. Turns out, maybe I need a coach. It makes perfect sense for other people to need one, but those of us with the OCD spreadsheets feel like we can manage everything just fine on our own. Until the breakdown, anyway.

Thanks for this article. Sometimes I feel like I should've been able to lose weight on my own, but for me, having someone else (Weight Watchers) lay out a system that I then just followed was what worked. And really, losing 50 lbs is an accomplishment either way.

Also, a good encouragement to be willing to go back to WW if that's what it takes to get back in trim after this pregnancy. Thanks again!

Awesome article! It was like reading something I had written, but had forgotten about, especially when you mention the word 'shizzle' and 'kale' in the same sentence!

So! True! I got my first personal training job last year and I was most successful in my own fitness efforts in the beginning when I asked other trainers to coach me. However, as I built my client base and and started to spend more and more energy caring about the nutrition and programs of my lovely clients, my own training and nutrition started to fall off. Finally, I quit my job because I was feeling so burned out, and it's only now, a couple of months later, that I've become interested in returning to practicing what I preached. It's so helpful to let go of my guilt about my little hiatus. Forgiving oneself is definitely a necessary first step for any trainee (I used to say that to my out-of-shape clients all the time!), and professional trainers are no exception.

Everyone needs a coach. mmm - yeah. That's why I ask you - and by the way, I went to my first PT session today. The Therapist said, "Your nerves should not be this good after only a month - I am not concerned for the ultimate outcome with your finger control with them at this stage so soon. Yay fish oil. Yay cabbage/broccoli/etc. It's very frustrating for coaches to tell people what to do and then when they complain nothing works, it's because the people did not follow directions.
