Fat, like beauty and appearance, can be read in a political context; the stigma attached to being fat is a control mechanism that supports a power structure of one group of people over another, and fat politics is a way of challenging the status quo. In our performances, PPPO'd uses a lot of images and metaphors about "fat" such as references to eating, food, pigs and desserts. We are atempting to do "fat" drag. That is our style of performance and politics - to parody stereotypes about fat people - unveiling them as the lies that they are. ![]() Fat activism makes public an identity that is largely invisible and discredited in wider "normal" society. By coming out as fat we acknowledge our bodies as normal, acceptable, even worth celebrating. Ultimately, fat acceptance is for everyBODY. Fat hatred is a power system in which we are all losers by various degrees. Where fat is feared everyBODY will live in fear of becoming fat, experiencing body hatred and insecurity. Fat acceptance is a deep and lasting acceptance of our bodies whatever our size. Feeling good helps us change our patterns: we stop wanting to lose weight, we lose our evangelistic faith in dieting, and we prefer to treat our bodies with warmth instead of viewing ourselves as objects to be punished. |
