My mum is still a regular gym bunny, mostly using the weights (she gets cardio from simply never stopping doing everything else) and is 66 soon. I took to training more seriously at 40 and it is transforming my life.

I'm 81 and have lifted weights since I was 12. I go to the gym (Huntington Beach, CA)six days a week. Mon, Wed, Fri to ride the stationary bike, lift weights, stretch--takes 2 hours. I go to the gym as 3:30 or 4am and return home around 6 am. Tues and Thurs to ride longer on bike and stretch longer, but no weights. I'm 6' 1" and a half (was six two but lost a half inch)and weight 175 stripped.

Have had articles written about me as both a writer and body builder at 81.

Keep pumpin', guys and gals. Have a great Holidays! Steve

Wow - sooo inspiring! I am 57 (well 2 months off 58) and just started to go to the gym. Not very well equipped but there are weights and I am trying. I feel a bit silly sometimes - the others are young and tanned - but I will keep going! I am checking out the vegan body builders site cos as a vegan I worry about how much food I eat to keep this up! Glad I found this site - lots of info - very imformative, am also going to see if I can find a personal trainer maybe. I am in Whitstable, Kent in the UK if anyone knows of a good one.
thanks so much, sit is now on my favorits, at work and home

Woohoo! The sistahs are doing it for themselves! And long maythey do so.
I started Crossfit aged 58. Celebrated my 60th with my first strict pullups. This is the best thing i have ever done for myself. I too see myself still doing CF when i am 90..... Can now clean 30kg, bench 32kg, deadlift 70kg and DO HANDSTANDS.....
My biological mother is a physical wreck... and to see her being hpoisted on and of wheelchair- chair - toilet etc is appalling. Most of this frailty is avoidable with a bit of consistent smart exercising...

I will never stop until my last breath.

@Joanna -- Awesome!! Sure, you may progress a little slower, but YOU WILL PROGRESS. I promise. If you are new to training, you will improve your strength and ability. Check back in with us in a few months and give us an update (and maybe some photos). :)

I looked up wt. lifting for a 74 yr old women (me). Started one month ago and thought since I am not progressing fast enough for me that maybe lifting 20#DB on flat bench was it for me.

So thanks for the encouragement this website gives. I will continue. (of course I am the oldest person in our little informal group)

Great article, but it should be pointed out that much research has been done on the nagative effects of stretching before maximal lifts. Stretching lowers strength.and.coordination for a few hours.

Secondly, while soy may help with estrogen in some regards, it also has a negative impact on the thyroid and has cancer links. Meat is the best and for those with lactose intolerance, you can supplement the missing enzymes.

Very cool. Thank you, Krista. I am about to turn 55 and can picture myself in the gym at 90. There's really no alternative. I can't seem to get as lean or as muscular as I did 15 years ago (the hormones aren't cooperating), but I can still train hard. I am delighted I can press 50 lb DBs on a flat bench (with a spot).

Get weak and infirm? Not an alternative.

I'll be 51 next month. I squat 425, deadlift 495 and bench 385. That's a 1305 pound total and I'm far from done. Never let age get in the way of your goals. I'll be lifting heavy for as long as my body holds out and I intend for it to hold out for a long time.
