Great article. When experiencing an episode of back pain seeing a physical therapist can assist you through all the stages you presented above. They will help settle the acute pain with manual therpay and electrotherapy. Then the more important part, teach you sepcific core exercises that will help prevent the back pain from returning. People who experience back pain once are at a high risk of getting it again, so prevention becomes extremely important for preventing further flare-ups!

wow this has a heap of grat information. great information.

i have a chiropractor who i see monthly for my lower back pain. also doesn't help when you are overweight and your back is put out because of the extra weight you have.

i have fallen down the steps enough times to damage my back. doesn't help the situation. i would love to try a swiss ball but i am scared because i am heavy/have poor balance.

thanks again.

I'm going on 1 year this month that I hurt my lower back at the gym. I was lifting a plate for bench, last exercise, and bent over instead of squatting. A strong spasm followed and that was that. I still get very tight at times and burning inflamed feeling comes and goes and varies in strength. Lying in bed is definitely not good for it. I've been able to return to deadlifts and squats, and I used Mark Rippetoe's dvd to correct form. Also went for a run. Oddly after lifting weights or running my back feels great. Just wish it felt that way the rest of the time.

Yep, years of chronic back pain means I squat to pick up socks off the floor, let alone anything else!

Good point about being prepared in the gym, but not while emptying the dishwasher! Squat to lift, but not just when working out, but when lifting that piece of furniture, box of books, tables etc!

Back pain is the absolute worst. You really don't know how bad it is and how much you use your back until you pull a muscle or injure yourself. :(
